SNAP Helps Millions Out of Poverty

A new analysis of Census Bureau data finds that SNAP moved 8.4 million people out of poverty in 2015, reducing the poverty rate from 15.4 percent to 12.8 percent. Groups with the largest proportionate decline in poverty because of SNAP included children, people living in suburban and rural areas, and African Americans, according to the brief from the Urban Institute.
