Safety Net Programs Significantly Reduce Hardship for American Families

A new study from the Urban Institute finds that social safety net programs – including Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, and public health insurance such as Medicaid – sharply reduce material hardship among American families, helping them afford basic needs like housing, food, and utilities. Participation in those programs reduces material hardship by nearly 50 percent, according to the study.
