Trump’s budget takes aim at illegal immigrants by limiting tax credits
“President Donald Trump’s budget proposal will limit eligibility for two tax credits, Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney told reporters on Monday, as the administration attempts to convince Congress to overhaul programs benefiting poorer Americans. According to documents released by the White House in advance of the full budget on Tuesday, Trump’s budget would limit eligibility for the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit to recipients ‘who are authorized to work in the U.S.’ The EITC is a benefit for people with low to moderate income, and the child tax credit similarly benefits low-income households. Together, changes to those two programs alone are estimated to save about $40 billion over a decade. The changes in eligibility for the EITC and child credit fall under the larger heading of reforming anti-poverty programs such as the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program, or SNAP. The program — commonly known as food stamps — would see a $193 billion cut under Trump’s proposal.”
