More than 50 percent of homeless families are black

According to the Annual Homeless Assessment Report to Congress, African American families account for 52 percent of homeless people with children, even though African Americans account for 13 percent of the total population. In comparison, white families accounted for 35 percent of the population of homeless people with children, although 77 percent of the total U.S. population is white. An estimated 568,000 Americans experienced homeless in 2019, and 40 percent of those individuals were African American. The Department of Housing and Urban Development report concluded that policies aimed towards ending homelessness in the U.S. must more seriously address the significant over-representation of African Americans in the homeless population.
