Map Illustrates American Debt
Mounting debt – including student loans, medical debt, and unpaid credit card bills – is one of the key drivers of wealth inequality in the United States. A new interactive map from the Urban Institute illustrates the geography of debt at the national, state, and county levels. The data show that debt is concentrated in the South, particularly South Carolina and Louisiana; a string of counties in the Appalachian regions of West Virginia and Kentucky; and in much of Texas. The map also includes data on debt by race and ethnicity.
