Many Americans Want Different Tax Rates for Poor, Wealthy
A majority of Americans say that corporations and the wealthy pay too little in federal taxes, while middle- and low-income people pay too much, according to a public opinion study from the American Enterprise Institute (AEI). Public Opinion on Taxes: 1937 to Today also finds that the proportion of Americans who think the tax system unfairly favors the wealthy has remained near 80 percent for decades. The study finds that about half of Americans say low-income people pay too much in taxes, while about 20 percent say the poor pay too little.
