Homeownership Can Be a Powerful Bridge to the Middle Class

A new issue brief from the Center for American Progress argues that homeownership is “the foundation for economic stability” in the United States, and that more must be done to ensure low-income Americans can afford quality housing. Toward Jobs and Justice finds that low-income households are being hit the hardest by rising rents since low-wage workers have seen their pay stagnate. The authors also argue that location is critical to a person’s opportunities and life outcomes, and that moving families from high-poverty to low-poverty areas could have a significant impact.
