Children’s Coverage Climb Continues
Using data from the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey, a new report from the Urban Institute finds that the number of low-income children covered by Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) rose significantly between 2013 and 2014, the first year that the Affordable Care Act caused many states to expand eligibility. Children’s Coverage Climb Continues finds that Medicaid and CHIP participation among eligible children rose by 2.3 percentage points in 2013-14, and the number of eligible uninsured children fell from 3.5 million to 2.8 million. Participation rates grew faster in states that chose to expand Medicaid, according to the report.
