We’re ceding ground in the war against infant mortality
“In the United States, the fight against infant mortality seemed slow but sure. Indeed, over the past decade, the rate at which babies died before their first birthday fell by 15 percent. But in recent years, progress in reducing overall infant mortality has stagnated. And for African Americans, we’ve actually lost ground, according to a study published this week in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The infant mortality rate for black babies hit 11.6 deaths per 1,000 births in 2012, but that number ticked up slightly higher in 2015 to 11.7.”
