A new report from the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) outlines a plan to restructure the housing safety net to reduce government spending while still combating homelessness and ensuring that affordable housing is readily available. Toward a More Efficient Housing Safety Net argues that expanding federal housing vouchers would be costly and ineffective at connecting vulnerable individuals with long-term affordable housing. The report calls for measures to prevent avoidable housing loss with direct cash assistance for low-income families, quickly rehousing individuals to avoid long-term homelessness, and focusing assistance on the most vulnerable populations.
