A new study from the Urban Institute finds that nearly half of full-time workers experience an “involuntary job separation” – including layoffs, quitting due to health concerns, or other unexpected departures – between ages 51 and 54. The study finds that these events often lead to a significant long-term reduction in earnings, threatening retirement security.
