May 26 Forum – Lessons Learned from the Charter Sector Over the Past 25 Years

The nation’s first charter school law was passed 25 years ago in Minnesota; today, charter schools serve nearly 3 million students in more than 40 states. Many of these schools show impressive outcomes for low-income students, but others face criticism for harsh discipline and strict admissions policies. The Center for American Progress (CAP) will host a panel discussion about the past, present, and future of the charter sector, and how to maximize its potential to help low-income students succeed. Speakers include Leo Casey, executive director of the Albert Shanker Institute; Richard D. Kahlenberg, senior fellow at the Century Foundation; David Osborne, director of the Reinventing America’s Schools Project; and Shantelle Wright, founder and CEO of Achievement Prep. The event will be held at CAP in Washington, D.C., from 10-11 a.m. EDT. Click here to register.
