Americans Opinions on Immigration Differ Significantly

A new survey conducted by the American Public Media Research Lab assessed Americans’ attitudes towards immigration and refugee policies. The researchers surveyed 1,003 respondents and analyzed each question based on factors including gender, age, race and ethnicity, education, income and political affiliation. The study showed that four in ten respondents believe that the U.S. accepts “the right amount” of immigrants while 25 percent answered, “allows too many,” 26 percent responded, “should allow more,” and 8 percent were unsure. The study found that adults under the age of 35 were more likely to favor admitting more immigrants than older adults. The study also showed that 22 percent of respondents would like to see more immigrants in their community, and this response was unrelated to the actual size of the immigrant population in the respondent’s community.
