Addressing Food Insecurity on College Campuses

A new brief from the Urban Institute investigates the prevalence of food insecurity among current college students. Assessing Food Insecurity on Campus: A National Look at Food Insecurity among America’s College Students finds that more than one in 10 college students experience food scarcity, and reports food insecurity rates by race, ethnicity, and postsecondary education path. The report notes that certain students, particularly those who are in two-year colleges and students of color, are significantly more likely to experience food insecurity. The authors recommend that policymakers and university administration take a targeted approach to addressing student food insecurity, including expanding SNAP or TANF benefits.
