Predominantly Black Nursing Homes Suffer Higher Death Rates During COVID-19 Pandemic
A new analysis from the Washington Post found that the death rate in nursing homes with majority-Black residents was more than 20 percent higher than facilities with majority-White residents. The data, compiled by Brown University, included 11,000 nursing homes and indicated that death rates increased as the proportion of Black residents increased. The death rate was nearly 40 percent higher in nursing homes where at least 7 in 10 residents were Black. More than 2,200 residents have died in the 250 majority-Black facilities, with a death rate of 6 residents per 100 beds.
