Delaware Online, September 20, 2016: Federal Grant to Pay for AP Tests
“The federal government is giving low-income students in Delaware $51,000 to help cover the cost of advanced placement exams. The grant is part of a nationwide effort to help historically under served students get ready for college, according to the U.S. Department of Education, which handed out a total of $28.4 million to 41 states and Washington, D.C. California ended up with the biggest grant, by far – it got a total of $11 million. Texas was next, with $3.5 million. The amount of the grants were based on estimates of the number of tests that would be taken by low-income students, according to the department. Since the department began the program in 2008, it has given out more than $190 million and the number of low-income students who have taken AP tests across the country has grown to just over 848,000 in 2014. That number was just above 710,000 in 2012, according to the most recent data available.”
