Council Speaker Pushes Half-Price MetroCards for Low-Income New Yorkers

“New York City Council Speaker Corey Johnson is pushing for a $200 million program to provide half-price MetroCards to hundreds of thousands of low-income residents. Mr. Johnson included the Fair Fares program in a preliminary budget proposal unveiled Tuesday, saying it could save low-income families $726 a year. The program would cost the city $200 million annually if all 800,000 eligible residents participate, he said, adding that it would take years to reach that level of enrollees.”
