Children of nonresident immigrants to get access to aid for D.C. college tuition

“The District will allow U.S. citizen children of nonresident immigrants to gain access to city-sponsored assistance in paying college tuition, part of a legal settlement with a student who was blocked from receiving critical education funds because of her mother’s immigration status. The 18-year-old D.C. Tuition Assistance Grant (DCTAG) program, designed to boost college attendance by giving D.C. residents up to $10,000 a year to attend public schools outside of the city, previously required a student’s parents to have legal residency to access the funds. The lawsuit argued that the rule discriminated against U.S. citizens who would otherwise be eligible for the program’s help, contravening DCTAG’s main goal.”
