Student loan debt is higher than ever: 44 million borrowers owe an average of $19,000, totaling $1.5 trillion nationwide. An independent analysis from the Aspen Institute Financial Security Program examines 16 federal student loan forgiveness proposals from advocates, researchers and policymakers across the political spectrum. The report assesses the proposals using measures such as the level of relief for borrowers (specifically financially vulnerable borrowers), the cost to the government and the contribution to racial equity in post-secondary education.
