How Step Up Savannah amplifies the voices of people living below the poverty line
“In 2008 when 26% of Savannahians lived below the poverty line, then-Mayor Otis Johnson wanted to address the issues plaguing his poverty-stricken city. Several nonprofit agencies aimed at improving quality-of-life were created, among them was Step Up Savannah.
Step Up is an economic mobility organization focused on wealth building, workforce development and advocacy for the city’s low- and middle-income population. The organization’s goals are lofty: to fill the gaps in services for the 22% of people living in poverty in Savannah, according to 2019 American Community Survey data.”
