Student Loan Crisis Hits African American Borrowers Hardest

Posted on

A new report from the Center for American Progress argues that the student loan crisis disproportionately affects African American college students. New Federal Data Show a Student Loan Crisis for African American Borrowers analyzes student loan data from the Department of Education, finding that 12 years after entering an undergraduate college, a typical African American student owes 114 percent of what they originally borrowed. A typical white student owes only 47 percent of their original loan after 12 years, according to the report. The authors argue that policymakers and universities should create greater accountability around federal financial aid to better serve African American students.
