Steady Improvements in Child Well-Being, But Areas of Concern

The Annie E. Casey Foundation’s 2017 KIDS COUNT Data Book finds many positive trends in child well-being in the United States, including increases in health coverage, lower child poverty rates, and higher rates of employment among parents. However, the annual report also finds that 10 million children live in high-poverty neighborhoods and that academic progress over the past ten years has been stagnant or negative. The KIDS COUNT report ranks states on various indicators of child well-being, placing New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Vermont, Minnesota, and Iowa in the top five.
