SNAP Reform Threatens Low-Income Households

A proposed Republican plan to convert the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to a block grant would be a serious setback in the fight against hunger, according to a new report from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. Block-Granting SNAP Would Abandon Decades-Long Federal Commitment to Reducing Hunger argues that the reform – which would give states a fixed amount of annual SNAP funding rather than using a formula based on states’ needs – would make SNAP much less effective at lifting families out of poverty and encouraging healthier diets. The authors caution against reforming “one of the few federal guarantees on meeting low-income households’ most basic needs.”
