Rental Housing Remains Extremely Costly

A new report from Apartment List finds that despite years of economic growth, the proportion of renter householders that spend more than 30 percent of their incomes on rent has barely budged since 2010, remaining near half. The 2018 Cost Burden Report finds that in 2017, there were just five metro areas – Dallas, Minneapolis, Charlotte, St. Louis, and Houston – where median rent was lower than the median renter’s income.
