Pathways to Employment for Working-Age Men

A wide range of policies with bipartisan support could address the chronic decline in workforce participation among working-age men, according to a new report from the American Enterprise Institute (AEI). Getting Men Back to Work: Solutions from the Right and Left finds that more than seven million American men ages 25 to 54 are out of work due to lack of postsecondary education, medical problems such as drug addiction, criminal records, a lack of job opportunities in certain areas, and other issues. The report argues that removing barriers to work for ex-offenders, noncustodial parents, and individuals with opioid dependencies should be a priority for policymakers.
