In Many Neighborhoods, Child Care Options Few and Far Between

More than half of all Americans live in neighborhoods with an insufficient supply of licensed child care, according to a new study by the Center for American Progress. The study finds that families in rural areas, as well as Hispanic and Latino families, are disproportionately likely to reside in these “child care deserts.” Lack of affordable child care may be depressing the labor force participation rate among mothers in affected neighborhoods, according to the report.
