How Work Requirements Could Threaten Workers’ SNAP Benefits

As Congress considers legislation to restrict Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits for those working under 20 hours per week, new research from the Brookings Institution examines changes in employment status for SNAP beneficiaries. It finds that over the course of 16 months, one in five adults without young children switches between working more than 20 hours a week and a different employment status. This threatens nearly 80% of SNAP beneficiaries who do not receive disability with potential benefit loss under work requirements, according to the report.
