Chart Book: Rental Assistance Reduces Hardship, Promotes Children’s Long-Term Success

Posted on

Federal rental assistance programs lifted four million people out of poverty in 2012, including 1.5 million children, according to a report from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. Chart Book: Rental Assistance Reduces Hardship, Promotes Children’s Long-Term Success shows that rental assistance also reduces homelessness among families with children by 75 percent, which has been shown to reduce rates of food insecurity, foster care placements, and domestic violence. The report emphasizes the importance of housing vouchers in particular, as they allow recipient families to move to safer, low-poverty neighborhoods that significantly improve their children’s education and health outcomes in adult life.
