Most Americans Share Same Values on Work and Responsibility, Regardless of Income

Although the Great Recession increased sympathy for the working poor and made most Americans more pessimistic about economic mobility, the poor and non-poor still share many of the same values about work and the government’s role, according to a poll by the Los Angeles Times and American Enterprise Institute. The poll finds that majorities of Americans of all incomes believe people, not the government, are primarily responsible for their wellbeing – the same result as in 1985. But respondents also say it’s much harder for low-income Americans to find a job now than it was in 1985, despite believing that the poor have the same job skills as everyone else.
