Youth in Poverty Face Extra Barriers to Success

Posted on

A new report from the Center for Promise finds that 10 percent of youth in the United States experience three or more adversities such as domestic violence or parental incarceration, and that youth living in poverty face many more of these than their wealthier peers. Barriers to Success: Moving Toward a Deeper Understanding of Adversity’s Effects on Adolescents finds that nearly 30 percent of children in poverty experience multiple adversities in adolescence, putting them at higher risk of performing poorly in school or dropping out. The authors recommend training school personnel to recognize and support youth in crisis, adopting two-generation solutions to poverty, and investing in efforts to engage disconnected youth in GED prep and job training programs.
