Where Housing Vouchers Concentrate Families

Housing vouchers concentrate families with children in high-poverty, racially segregated neighborhoods, according to a new study from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP). CBPP examined the location of families with children enrolled in the Housing Choice Voucher Program, America’s largest federal rent assistance program, and finds that few families using vouchers live in low-poverty neighborhoods – even when affordable units are available. Voucher-assisted families of color are more likely to live in “minority-concentrated” neighborhoods than families of color overall, according to the study.
