Voucher program is supposed to help poor families rent a home. Nearly half the time, it fails.

“Loper is among thousands of people across the country who are losing their federal housing vouchers before they can ever use them. Until recently, the true scale of this problem was unknown. But a groundbreaking analysis by the Furman Center for Real Estate and Urban Policy at New York University found that in 2022, nearly half of households awarded housing vouchers were unable to use them. The problem has been rapidly worsening. From 2018 to 2022, the share of households unable to use their voucher increased from 35% to 45%.”
