They found there has been progress in women living in poverty, but there still needs to be improvements. They found that over a third (36.4%) of female-headed households with children under age 5 still live in poverty. And while Utahns experience lower rates of poverty than the national average (8.9% in Utah vs. 12.3% nationwide), more women continue to live in poverty than men (9.6% vs. 8.2%, respectively).

“Poverty rates are noticeably worse for some women within certain racial groups,” said Wood.

They found that the rates of Native American and Native Alaskan women living in poverty are higher than most. And Black women in Utah, higher still 36.8% are living in poverty.
