The Link Between Inequality, Segregation, and Intergenerational Mobility

Over the last 40 years, the US has experienced a steady increase in income inequality and a substantial increase in residential segregation by income. A new working paper published by the National Bureau of Economic Research in Massachusetts explores the relationship between residential segregation by income and inequality. The researchers found that the neighborhood where parents choose to raise their children and invest in their education impacts these trends and that segregation contributed significantly to the increase in inequality between 1980 and 2010.
