A new report from the Urban Institute examines how federal policymakers can better support the 1 million low-income parents who attend school or receive technical training while also holding a job. Supporting Parents Who Work and Go to School: A Portrait of Low-Income Students Who Are Employed finds that most working parents in education programs are young women, and most work a regular daytime schedule while also attending school full time. Federal and state programs could help these parents manage complex schedules by offering child care assistance, on- or off-campus counseling, and nontraditional class schedules, according to the authors.
