September 10 – Marriage Penalties, the Marriage Divide, and the US Safety Net
A wealth of research has upheld the importance of marriage for children and communities. Yet many federal safety-net programs burden couples with steep financial penalties when they choose to marry. On September 10, AEI’s W. Bradford Wilcox will be joined by Elaine Maag, Matt Weidinger, and Angela Rachidi to discuss a new research brief, developed by Dr. Wilcox in collaboration with the Department of Health and Human Services, titled “The marriage divide, marriage penalties, and United States welfare policy.” They will outline the latest research surrounding marriage penalties and discuss proposed policy solutions to eliminate marriage penalties from means-tested programs. The event will take place on Thursday, September 10 at 12 p.m. EST.
