Selective colleges are less likely to enroll high levels of low-income students

“The study adds to the growing body of evidence that our nation’s higher education system is becoming increasingly stratified. That has consequences for the students enrolled. Less-selective colleges often have fewer resources than top-tier schools which could make it more difficult for students to graduate and reap the benefits of their education. What’s more, this stratification also means selective schools wind up becoming bastions of students from relatively wealthy and educated families, said Margaret Cahalan, the vice president for research of the Pell Institute.”
