School Choice Affects Families Differently By Area, Income

Posted on

New policies to offer families vouchers for school choice would affect families very differently based on their location and income level, according to a new analysis from the Brookings Institution. Who Could Benefit from School Choice? Mapping Access to Public and Private Schools uses nationwide data on the locations of public and private elementary schools to estimate how many American families would gain access to new school options under different potential school choice policies. The report finds that offering school choice within a district would give families in poverty more options, but would do little for families in rural areas and those with higher incomes.
