Safety Net Reforms Threaten Family Wellbeing

A new report from the Urban Institute finds that even with the economy approaching full employment, nearly 40 percent of adults say they or their families had trouble in 2017 meeting at least one basic need such as food, health care, or housing. The authors argue that more families’ wellbeing could be threatened by proposed safety net reforms, including expanded work requirements for SNAP and Medicaid, increased rental and health care costs, and changes to immigrants’ eligibility for benefits.
