Posted on

A new report from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities argues that a bill to reform safety net programs introduced by the House Freedom Caucus would force states to impose rigid requirements on recipients and likely make deep cuts to programs such as SNAP and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). Freedom Caucus “Welfare Reform” Bill Would Increase Poverty and Hardship Without Helping People Succeed in the Labor Market notes that the Welfare Reform and Upward Mobility Act would require states to engage 75-80 percent of SNAP and TANF participants in work activities, far above what most states have ever achieved. The result of the legislation would likely be steep cuts to SNAP and TANF funds, according to the report.
