Poverty and Opportunity in the States: The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly
A new report from the Center for American Progress (CAP) evaluates state-level progress on alleviating poverty and increasing opportunity by tracking 15 indicators, including child poverty, teen birth rates, and the gender wage gap. Poverty and Opportunity in the States: The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly finds that “states such as California, Virginia, and Illinois took critical steps to strengthen economic security and opportunity for working families, while others – such as Texas and Wisconsin – enacted policies that put the American dream even further out of reach for their residents.” The report includes report cards and rankings for each state.
