Oregon pauses awarding child care subsidies to low-income parents, citing surge in demand

“Oregon is putting low-income working families on a waitlist for day care subsidies because it doesn’t have enough money set aside to pay for all who qualify, Oregon Early Learning Director Alyssa Chatterjee said Wednesday. The state experienced an overwhelming surge in demand after it made a series of changes that broadened the pool of families who qualify for subsidies and lowered co-pays, she said. All families already receiving subsidies on behalf of about 23,000 children can keep them.”
