Opinion: Time to take action against period poverty in N.J.
“One in five teens in the United States has struggled to afford sanitary products or were not able to purchase them at all, according to a survey commissioned by a manufacturer of these items. The same survey found that 84% of U.S. students have either missed class time or know someone who did because of this situation. Adding to the problem is an ongoing shame that surrounds a normal biological function. Menstruating teens report emotional anxiety, and 64% of students in one survey believe that society teaches people to be ashamed of their periods. Two thirds of menstruating students do not want to be at school when having their period, and 79% feel they need more in-depth education around menstrual health.”
