One in Six Women of Color Are Facing Food Insecurity Due to Pandemic

A new study released by the National Women’s Law Center shows that since March, 57.1 percent of Hispanic women and 53.6 percent of Black women have lost income, compared to 41 percent among white men and women. The study also showed that one in six Black and Hispanic women reported experiencing food insecurity, a rate more than double that of white or Asian American women. Women of color are also disproportionately impacted by housing insecurity with nearly 25 percent of Black women and 15 percent of Hispanic women reporting that they are behind on rent payments. Women have also experienced job losses at alarming rates, as 12.1 million women lost their employment between February and April. Additionally, 865,000 of the 1.1 million people who dropped out of the labor force in August and September were women.
