The New York Daily News, April 28, 2016: Getting more low-income strivers to college: Michelle Obama’s College Signing Day reminds us of a widespread underlining challenge
“First Lady Michelle Obama’s Reach Higher Initiative is encouraging academic excellence by promoting more than 1,000 College Signing Day events across the country this week to celebrate students getting admitted to college, in the same way we celebrate student athletes signing to play on college teams. But too many high-achieving students from low-income families are missing out on the opportunity to attend our nation’s top colleges and universities, where they are severely underrepresented. This is as much a waste of talent as having a remarkable high school football star pass up the chance to attend a college with a top-ranked team.”
