Nearly 60 Percent Increase in Older Adult Food Insecurity During COVID-19

An analysis conducted by Diane Schanzenbach and other researchers at Northwestern University shows that a dramatic increase in older adults (60+) facing food insecurity during the COVID-19 crisis. Food insecurity rates among older adults have increased 58.8 percent during the COVID-19 crisis with 13.5 percent of older adults struggling to put food on the table. The pandemic has also worsened disparities in food security across racial and ethnic groups that existed before COVID-19. Twenty three percent of Black older adults and 24.3 percent of Hispanic older adults are food insecure, compared to 10.6 percent of White older adults.
