More Than One in Six Adults Were Food Insecure Two Months into the COVID-19 Recession
Researchers from the Urban Institute analyzed data collected between May 14 and 27, 2020 in the Institute’s Coronavirus Tracking Survey to examine how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected food insecurity. Researchers found that one in six nonelderly adults (17.7 percent) and more than one in five parents living with children under 19 (21.8 percent) reported that their households experienced food insecurity during the prior 30 days. Rates of food insecurity in Hispanic adults’ households (27.1 percent) and Black adults’ households (27 percent) were approximately double that of white adults’ households (13.5 percent).
