Michigan’s transgender community faces poverty, bias, study shows
“Alexandria Gibson doesn’t need a survey to let her know the transgender community suffers discrimination. She has her own horror stories. The 22-year-old Detroit woman said she has been physically assaulted so many times for being transgender that she has lost count. She was hospitalized once for a sexual assault. She has been denied numerous jobs, she said. She’s homeless. And she feels abandoned by much of her family. So the new study released today that shows Michigan transgender individuals face far more poverty, unemployment and psychological stress than other Americans wasn’t exactly a surprise.”
