Media Portrayal of Black Families Misrepresents Reality
Color of Change and Family Story’s new report, A Dangerous Distortion of Our Families, shows that the media has portrayed Black families in an inaccurate manner, creating a false narrative about the lives of Blacks in America. According to the study, the media consistently over-represents Black families in coverage about poor families, contributing to the perception of Black Americans as impoverished and “responsible for poverty, welfare and crime…”. Beyond providing these statistics, the report suggests ways in which the media can prevent this sort of false coverage in the future.
