May 23 Forum – Strengthening the Safety Net to Mitigate the Effects of Future Recessions
While economists and policymakers generally agreed that fiscal stimulus was necessary to bolster the American economy in the wake of the Great Recession, there were broad disagreements over the size and nature of that stimulus and how it impacted households near or below the poverty line. The Hamilton Project at the Brookings Institution will host a policy forum to discuss the future of fiscal stimulus and safety net spending in economic downturns. Speakers include Robert Rubin, former U.S. Treasury Secretary; Lawrence Summers, professor at Harvard University; Shaun Donovan, director of the Office of Management and Budget; Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA); Sheldon Danziger, president of the Russell Sage Foundation, and Cecilia Muñoz, chair of the White House Domestic Policy Council. The event will be held at Brookings in Washington, D.C., from 1:30 – 4:30 p.m. EDT. Click here to register.
